Behind the scenes of designing abroad- What you do Behind the scenes of designing abroad-
What you don’t always see: the heat and humidity that make flowers (and me!) wilt faster than expected, tools that don’t quite work, or supplies that arrive differently than planned.

In those moments, you learn to let go, improvise, and trust your instincts. Flexibility becomes the quiet strength that keeps the work moving forward.

Flowers: Alocasia, Butterfly Plant, Dutchman’s Pipe Vine, Birdsfoot Fern, Lotus leaves/pods, Anthurium, Bamboo wood veneer

I finally stopped crying. I know I’m not the on I finally stopped crying.

I know I’m not the only parent going through this, but it feels like my world just shifted completely. I dropped my daughter off at college—out of state.

For the past five years, my focus has been on my kids. Navigating high school through Covid, graduations, and then college. Both of them are stepping into new chapters of life, and as a parent—and as a business owner—my instinct has always been to go into solution mode. How do we fix this? Make a list. Check things off. Budget. Set goals. Push forward. That’s what I do.

But through trial and error, I’ve learned this season of parenting isn’t about me at all—it’s about what they want and need. I’ve shifted from “let’s get this done, A to Z” to asking, “How can I support you?” That question has changed everything. It opens the door for honest answers. Sometimes they need financial help. Sometimes it’s emotional support. Sometimes it’s just me listening.

I’m not used to asking for help myself, but even that’s changed. I’ve leaned on friends who’ve been through this transition, my parents, and recently my floral family in Hawai’i. Aunty Sue from @suvexpressions and Leland from Watanabe Floral—you’ve given me comfort just knowing you’re there if she needs anything.

To anyone else stepping into this season of empty nesting: you’re not alone. Let’s hold each other up through this tender transition.

And to Hawai’i—please be kind to my baby.

My everyday work is in the commercial and event fl My everyday work is in the commercial and event floristry where I do a lot of lush seasonal designs. It’s hard to find time to do the labor intensive or discovery work. But when I do, I think it is one of the most exciting and important part of your art. Those unique moments that happen when you are figuring stuff out.

Dreams that transcend time ✨ Six months ago, I h Dreams that transcend time ✨ Six months ago, I had a vivid dream of my father-in-law, who left us in 2019. In the dream, he transformed from a majestic hawk to a fiery Phoenix, eventually evolving into a cosmic being with white hair and a striking black streak. He often visits me in my dreams, clad in his consistent black tank top and cargo shorts.

This weekend, we bid farewell to his incredible mother, who graced us with 99 remarkable years. As I designed a wreath for his memorial, an overwhelming sense of familiarity embraced me. Life’s journey may be unpredictable, but the connection with loved ones, even beyond the veil, persists.

Facial expression is probably the oldest form of h Facial expression is probably the oldest form of human communication, I’m sure we understood each other through our faces long before we ever uttered words. I was first drawn in by the intricate layers of Seths work then by the utter simplicity of the message- portraits expressing raw emotion captured in thick black lines, smudges and tears. I was haunted by the images and his process. The way he lifted color by using tape to remove, and at times even erase what he created previously, contributing to the many layers upon layers. This is the magic of his art- translating each persons story clearly without words., right there in black and white

It reminded me of my own process, and I drew similarities to my own experience. The act of placing and designing flowers unbeknownst until a single line of thought comes into mind, where does the next flower go, how will it lay, how will it grow or change over hours or days or weeks. I work through constantly editing- a flurry of adding then a gradual removal, I’ve always looked for ways to remove, in a way contributing to ENTROPY

Entropy of Time always move forward, non-reversible. Without effort or energy, even relationships change. Entropy is all around us.
For the floral installation:

I used aged bamboo poles and placed them randomly, some are hung with out thought, some were left to sway, and some were left untouched after they were brought into the space.
I hung 1 bamboo horizontally to capture the low entropy nature of order,

I selected flowers that were dried, altered with color, forcefully changed, fragrance dissipate and let the flowers sit.

For the Interactive Art: Entropy in Relationships

I curated 3 songs that were downloaded to MP3. Viewer must select 1 song randomly.
I placed to 2 chairs in the middle of the installation facing each other.
My intention is to have the viewers pick an undisclosed song and listen to the music while looking at each other.
Entropy is created at this particular moment, they just don’t know it.
